A high school teacher in Germany has been arrested on suspicion of murder – and accused of committing acts of cannibalism – after the remains of another man were discovered near a forest.

The 41-year-old teacher was arrested on Thursday in the German capital Berlin after "completely meatless" bones belonging to a 44-year-old victim were discovered in the countryside north of the city.

Reports have suggested teeth marks were found on the bones of the victim – while the school teacher suspect is believed to have visited online cannibalism chatrooms.

Sniffer dogs led police straight to the door of the suspect in the Pankow neighbourhood of the city after the bones were discovered.

Germany’s Deutsche Welle news outlet reports police discovered bone fragments, traces of blood and cutting tools at the home of the arrested suspect.

While Germany's DPA news agency claims the suspect had visited internet chat rooms dedicated to cannibalism.

Berlin prosecutors' office spokesman Martin Steltner said on Friday: "The suspect had an interest in cannibalism.

"He searched online for the topic."

Addressing the reports the victim may have been eaten, and highlighting other similar cases in recent years in Germany in which cannibalism was committed with willing victims, Mr Steltner added there were "no indications that the victim consented in any way".

Further reporting by Germany’s Der Spiegel suggested the men met on gay, bisexual and transgender dating website PlanetRomeo.

It is believed the victim was a 44-year-old electrical engineer who had disappeared in early September.

Neither the suspect nor the victim have been named publicly at this stage.

This is not the first suspected incidence of cannibalism in Germany in recent years.

Back in 2001, computer programmer Armin Meiwes made headlines around the world when he was found to have met, killed and eaten a consenting victim that he had met online.

The 58-year-old is serving a life sentence after being found guilty of murder during a retrial in 2005.
