Drug gang busted after smuggling cocaine ‘in woman’s breast implants’

A drug operation thought it was keeping abreast of the law until it was discovered to be smuggling liquid cocaine in fake boobs.

Colombian authorities dismantled the drug gang, called "Los Cirujanos" (The Surgeons), which is accused of recruiting women to smuggle liquid cocaine into Europe in their breast implants.

The organisation was smashed during two raids in the city of Cali in the country's Valle del Cauca department and in Medellin, Antioquia.

Six men and four women were arrested for trafficking drugs into Spain and across the rest of Europe.

One of the detainees has been identified as a renowned Medellin hospital doctor, and another suspect is a specialist at a hospital in Cali.

Another member is accused of pretending to be a doctor to recruit female victims with promises of a job in Spain.

The gang allegedly recruited women and made them undergo illegal operations in hotel rooms or rented apartments to implant liquid cocaine in their fake boobs.

They also used calf implants, designed to give women more shapely legs, to smuggle the drugs by replacing the silicon with liquid cocaine.

The drug mules were later send to Madrid where the implants were removed by gang members.

The victims usually flew out of the Alfonso Bonilla Aragon International Airport in Cali and the El Dorado Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento International Airport serving the Colombian capital Bogota. All suspects have been kept in custody as the investigation continues.

It comes a week after an air hostess was sentenced to nine years and three months in Australia for smuggling a kilo of heroin between her thighs.

A court in Victoria heard how Malaysian Zailee Hana Zainal, 40, spent three months practising how to walk with hard drugs strapped between her legs.

She had become embroiled in the criminal underworld after a desperate plea to pay her families medical bills.

Zainal was told she will serve at least four years and nine months without parole.
