Prime Minister Boris Johnson is currently self-isolating after the NHS Test and Trace app said he had come into contact with someone who has COVID-19. Ashfield MP Lee Anderson has tested positive for COVID-19 just days after a meeting with Mr Johnson. But Health Secretary Matt Hancock was asked about a photograph of the meeting between Boris Johnson and Lee Anderson, which appeared to show the pair closer than two metres apart. Ms Burley said: “Why are they not wearing masks in that photograph?”
He replied: “They are socially distant and the critical thing is, as Prime Minister, you do meet people.
“I have no doubt he will be driving things forward via Zoom but the thing is when you are in close contact with somebody you do need to self-isolate if they are positive and that’s exactly what the Prime Minister has done.”
The presenter continued: “You also need to wear a mask when you’re in close contact with people especially indoors, don’t you? And they’re not and look what has happened.”
The Cabinet Minister said: “There are of course Covid-secure guidelines for how you operate at work and this is true in Downing Street or in any other work environment.
“Then if you test positive, it’s really good that the test result came back so quickly.
“We’ve brought those test turnaround times down.
“This is how the system ought to operate and then Lee Anderson MP and the Prime Minister are following those rules.”
Ms Burley added: “Why on earth are they not wearing a mask? As a result, our Prime Minister is incapacitated on what could be one of the most important weeks ever for Brexit.
“They should be wearing masks.
“You know that, I know that. Why are they not doing it?”
Mr Hancock continued: “There are Covid-secure guidelines in any workplace and I have absolutely no doubt the Prime Minister will be able to drive the agenda forward and communicate with the public in the way he does normally.”
